Die U-Bahn in Athen hat drei Linien, von denen eine (von Piräus ausgehend) 1869 eröffnet, 1904 elektrifiziert und 1957 durch die Athener Innenstadt verlängert wurde. Die anderen beiden Linien wurden 2000 resp. 2003 eröffnet. Das besondere an der Athener Metro sind die in vielen Stationen ausgestellten Kunstwerke, in der Innenstadt antik, an den Außenästen solche von modernen Künstlern.
Die Gesamtlänge des Metronetzes beträgt ca. 55 km (nach anderen Quellen 80 km) und umfaßt 51 Stationen.
Der Wagenpark umfasst drei Generationen an Fahrzeugen:

den von MAN in Nürnberg, später Siemens, entwickelten Fahrzeugen, die 1983-85 geliefert wurden

den von Siemens und Hellenic Shipyards gebauten 28 Züge (56 Drei Wagenzüge, die zu 6-Wagenzügen gekuppelt sind) und

den Fahrzeugen von Rotem (Südkorea), die in zwei Ausführungen – nur Gleichstrom (14 Stück) und 7 in Gleich- und Wechselstrom für die Linie zum Flughafen – vorhanden sind (Lieferung 2003/04)

The underground of Athens has three lines, of which the first (starting from Pireus) was opened in 1869, electrified in 1904 and crossing the city centre in 1957. The both other lines were opened in 2000 resp. 2003. One very special thong with Athens underground is, that a lot of stations are little museums with works of art, antique in the city centre and modern in the outerskirts.
The full length of the system is approx. 55 km (other sources speak from 80 km) with 51 stations.

The fleet consists of three generations of vehicles:

the ones built by MAN in Nuemberg (later Siemens),

the (very similar) generation from Siemens and Hellenic Shipyards (56 three car trainsets, which means they are used as 28 six-car-units)

and the new generation (2003/04) from the South korean supplier Rotem, with two different train traction controls: DC (14 trainsets) and DC/AC (7 trainsets) for the service to the airport.
